by: DJ

The teams from Tabuk National High School swept all categories of Brainwars 2006 to rule the quiz bee held at the Tabuk People’s gym on December 23, 2006.

In Category A, SWA garnered the second place while STS Tabuk clinched the Third place.

In Category B, Saint Tonis settled for the second place after a tightly contested round, and another team from TNHS grabbed the third place..

The winners of each category received certificates and cash prizes distributed as follows:
1st place: 1,500
2nd place: 1,000
3rd place: 500

The event was originally scheduled on October 30, 2006 at the KASC “cogon” gym. The super typhoon “Cimmaron,” however, prompted the organizers to re-schedule the event to December in time for the Christmas break.

About 30 teams from different secondary schools in Kalinga participated in the quiz bee which was held on the morning of December 23 before the RockRockan Battle of the Bands Kicked off 5 hours later. They were asked questions randomly picked from various subjects namely Math, Science, General Knowledge, and Kalinga Trivia. Despite some minor lapses on the part of the organizers, the event proceeded smoothly.

Ms. Susan Mogao led the team in-charge of organizing the said quiz bee which will be held annually as part of UP GIMPONG’s thrust in raising the level of academic competitiveness among high school students.

The event was sponsored by the SK Provincial Federation of Kalinga thru the initiative of Ms. Janine Dagadag, and it was coordinated with the Department of Education-Kalinga Division office.

RockRockan Battle of the Bands

Extreme Ground 6 and Magnum Opus Dominate RockRockan Battle of the Bands
by: DJ

Belching out a hard-rocking arrangement filled with forceful “throatings,” the “Extreme Ground 6” wowed the crowd to emerge victorious in the “Cover song” category of the 2006 RockRockan Battle of the Bands held at the Tabuk People’s Gym on December 23.

Their own rendition of “Karimlan and Adios” earned the approval of the crowd and the nod of the judges who gave them an average score of 91.2%. The band is composed of Kokoy, Pepot, Ian, Alex, Danilo, and Rogelio.

Trailing the “Extreme Ground 6” is the band “Magnum Opus” which performed a heart-thumping cover of “Pull Me Under” by Dream Theater and “Cemetery Gates” by Pantera.. Nonetheless, their act wasn’t enough as they were behind by mere 1% in the judges’ score cards to settle for the second place. The members of the band include Junjun on vocals, Tyron on bass, Owen on guitar, and Godsen on drums.

Completing the list of winners in this category is the band “Passengers” which played the hit single “Stars by Callalily” and a punk version of Bizaare Love Triangle” by the Speaks.”

In the “Original Composition” category, Magnum Opus” turned out to be the best in creating original songs as their piece was adjudged the winner. Their composition entitled “In Kalinga” focused on the theme “Promoting Kalinga as a Tourist Destination.” It entices the listeners to visit the different tourist spots in our province.

Headed by Gayefritz Ofilas and Victor Dalanao Jr, this flagship project of UP GIMPONG for the second semester was an overwhelming success. Thanks a lot to the efforts of its zealous members. Of course, this event would not be possible without the support of the following sponsors: Hon. Mayor Camilo T. Lammawin, Ms. Janine Dagadag, the late vice-governor Rommel Diasen, Northern Star Cable and Radio Natin FM. To our sponsors, thank you so much.

We are looking forward again in organizing the 2007 RockRockan Battle of the Bands this coming December…watch out for it.
